Thankful ‘N Thoughtful
Thursday, November 27, 2008
Ah, Thanksgiving. Food, family, friends, food, and food. The real beginning of the holiday season, no matter what department stores would have you believe (Christmas music the day after Halloween? Too early!). A time for remembering what’s really important and being thankful for what you have, which I think is especially important these days.
Thankful
With that in mind, I’d like to take a minute to talk about some things that I’m thankful for this year.
Family & Friends
This should always be at the top of the list, if you ask me. My family and friends are totally awesome. I’m lucky to have such a close, supportive family, and I’ve made a lot of new friends over the last few years through work and school. And thanks to the Internet, I can keep in touch with friends old and new all over the world. I hope they all have an amazing Thanksgiving.
Direction
Just a few years ago, I was at the University of Maine, not enjoying what I was studying, and not knowing what I wanted to do. Since then, I’ve started working at Media WORKS and discovered that I really love Web design. Now I’m going to school at EMCC, studying business management, so that I can eventually have my own small Web design business. It feels good to have a plan and know what I want to do.
Changes of Scenery
Within the next few weeks, I’ll be moving… twice! My family and I are moving to a new house, and Media WORKS is also moving to a new location. I think a change of scenery could be good, even if it’s just down the road. It gets you out of your comfort zone a little bit and shakes things up, and that might be just what I need right now.
Amazing Music
If I’m near my computer or a radio, chances are there’s going to be music playing. I absolutely love it. I might be addicted, actually. I’m constantly discovering new (and old) music that I love, thanks to Last.fm, iTunes, Pandora, and Bull Moose Music. At the risk of sounding like a commercial, I’m also glad that I have a local radio station that plays awesome music (and not just the same old stuff every day).
Simplicity
I love to keep things simple, especially when I’m designing awesome Web sites. But I’ve also been applying this philosophy to my life. In preparation for moving, I’ve been sorting through all of my stuff, and just getting rid of stuff I don’t use anymore. I’ve got boxes of books, DVDs, CDs, and more that I plan to either sell or just give away. It actually feels good to rid myself of “stuff” and keep things clean and uncluttered.
Thoughtful
I do a lot of thinking. About life, design, music, and plenty more. I’ve been trying to gather some ideas for blog posts, so be on the lookout. I’m planning to do some year-end music roundups, show off some stuff from my sketch book, and whatever else I can think of. Expect lots of music posts. Until then…
What are you thankful for this year?
